Amid fears of the spread of new COVID variant Omicron in Japan, Christmas parties and New Year celebrations have been cancelled, remote working has been re-instated and shoppers' attention at Christmas sales has shifted to comfortable loungewear rather than going-out outfits. Loungewear is "back in fashion".

Despite an increase in incidents and concerns about a possible further restrictions, the Japanese retail sector showed strong sales in December. At the checkout, clothing and jewellery were the popular Christmas gift items.

Japanese consumers are spending more on getting "stay at home" more comfortable, stylish and enjoyable.
